The Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) was established by the Malaysian Government in 1957 in Gelugor, Penang under the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM). As the only public research institution that focuses on the field of fisheries, FRI has significantly expanded its functions and roles with the establishment of 10 research centres and stations throughout the country. In 1995, IPP’s headquarters was relocated to a new complex in Batu Maung, Penang. Throughout its 66 years of establishment, IPP has progressed well and is considered one of the leading tropical fisheries research institutions in the region.

Institut Penyelidikan Perikanan (IPP) telah ditubuhkan oleh Kerajaan Malaysia pada tahun 1957 di Gelugor, Pulau Pinang di bawah Jabatan Perikanan Malaysia, Kementerian Pertanian dan Keterjaminan Makanan (KPKM). IPP adalah satu-satunya institusi dimana penyelidikan dalam pelbagai disiplin perikanan dilaksanakan. Semenjak ditubuhkan, IPP berkembang dengan ketara dari segi saiz dan lokasi dengan penubuhan 10 buah pusat dan stesen penyelidikan di Semenanjung Malaysia dan Sarawak dengan infrastruktur penyelidikan yang mencukupi dan penyelidik yang berkelayakan. Pada tahun 1995, ibu pejabat IPP telah berpindah dari Gelugor ke kompleks baharu di Batu Maung, Pulau Pinang. Sepanjang penubuhan selama 66 tahun, IPP semakin progresif dan boleh dianggap sebagai salah satu institusi penyelidikan perikanan tropika yang terkemuka di rantau ini.
